Free and open source

• Matteshot is now free and open source under MIT OR Apache-2.0. The source is on GitHub.
• The 14-day trial, license keys, activation, device limits and the update term are gone. Nothing in the app checks a license, contacts a license server, or stops working offline.
• An install that had an ended trial or a paid license keeps working without doing anything. The old license.json and registry values are left where they were and ignored; settings, History and captures are untouched.
• Usage statistics are gone. Matteshot sends no telemetry of any kind, and the consent box on the welcome screen and the checkbox in Settings are removed. A config that still has the old telemetry keys loads normally.
• Share is no longer part of the official build, because there is no longer a hosted upload service. It is available to anyone who builds with --features share and runs their own server from share-server/; see docs/self-hosting-share.md.
• The tray menu no longer has Buy or license entries, and Settings no longer has Deactivate or the update-term note. Its footer reads "Free and open source".
• Updates still arrive automatically and are still verified against the signed release record and the Authenticode signature before they install.

Fixes and hardening since 0.20.0

• The picker no longer shows "copied" until the background copy has actually landed.
• A recording or an export is no longer deleted when its validation check cannot run or the final rename fails; the partial file is kept for recovery.

What changed

• A recording that finishes after the editor gave up waiting is still published; startup recovers playable recordings instead of deleting them (#77)
• The capture history can no longer be erased by one failed read (#77)
• The license refresh token is DPAPI-protected on disk, with a downgrade sidecar so a pre-migration build on the same machine keeps working (#76, #78)
• Diagnostics, telemetry, and the license state carry no customer identity (#76)
• OCR redaction fails closed on unreadable words (#74)
• Release pipeline hardened end to end (#73)

What's new

• Speed up selected sections of a recording at 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x. Sped sections are muted during export so long waits compress cleanly.
• Opt into smooth 60 FPS recording for games and other motion-heavy captures. The default remains the lighter 30 FPS mode.
• Stronger safeguards protect captures, settings, licensing state, scrolling output, and share completion from silent failures.

• Window capture falls back when Windows.Graphics.Capture rejects a target (empty items / E_INVALIDARG), including hosted surfaces like Ceiling's native taskbar widget. The overlay crops the frozen frame for uncapturable windows instead of erroring out.
• Settings cleanup: behavior and recording groups reordered, telemetry last. Deactivate and diagnostics moved into Settings.
• Tray: Open videos folder; dropped Autostart and PrtScn toggles (still in Settings).
• Dropped the picker's default-editor Edit option and the tweak editor's default-editor button.

0.14.2

• The Step tool stays armed in the photo and video editors, so consecutive clicks drop 1, 2, 3, 4 without re-picking the tool (the website demo does the same).
• Copy keeps the tweak editor open with a brief "copied" confirmation, so you can keep refining the same capture. A new Settings toggle, "Keep the editor open after Copy", restores the old close-after-copy behavior.
